Voting Systems at Awkward Utopia

Voting Systems

At a recent post UES Krispy Kreme gathering we briefly discussed different voting methods. Instead of simply selecting one candidate, I suggested we give each voter 100 points to distribute among the candidates. My intention was to help 3rd party candidates who might get fewer votes in a ‘pick one’ system as, for example, Libertarians select the Republican candidate out of practicality. In the point system, a voter could give 20 points to the Libertarian and 80 to the Republican, 0 to the rest.

Via Statistical Modeling I discovered Range Voting. As that site describes it, range voting is akin to Olympic judges. Each performer (candidate) receives a score from each judge (voter) and the candidate with the highest average score wins. This method is modified to account for ‘no opinion’ and non-response.

I’m not sure how much I want to delve into the realm of competing voting systems, it appears especially deep. Here is the Clarke-Groves-Tideman-Tullock voting system: each voter states the utility of each candidate for him, and the candidate with the greatest total utility wins. The actual system uses money to induce honesty. To Bob or anyone else familiar with public choice: is this a standard model covered in public choice?
