Bob and I decided to rewrite the UES Constitution and try to get it approved before the end of Raju’s Presidency, thinking it would be a fitting conclusion to a good semester. This semester has been the beginning of the Third Age of UES, with all these freshmen and a resurgent sophomore bloc. So it […]

Good news, everyone. Bruce Willis is now a leading contender for the next Nobel Peace Prize. Also, and this is the real kicker, pundits think there’s a good chance he may wind up in a tie with 50 Cent. Prominent commentators such as Disco at OP believe this would be the only fair result.

My bank has added a new layer of account security involving those pesky verification questions. Forced to use these, I had difficulty selecting from their list of predetermined questions. Then I realized: The questions are geared towards a specific kind of family. Here’s a sample question: “When is your wedding anniversary?” I was offended by […]

In this article, an evolutionary biologist discusses how sex fosters the genetic diversity necessary to avoid complete annihilation by pathogens. The mixing creates a sort of “moving target” for our natural enemies. Well, what are you waiting for? Go do your patriotic duty and save the human race! (Monocrat, I am not looking in […]

From a cue on Marginal Revolution, I decided to take a look at the NYTimes Notable Books of the year. There are 100 of them. About 50% of the books that I find come from recommendations or lists made by other people so I am always glad to browse these and jot down suggestions. Alas, […]

The French police are arresting symphony orchestra musicians from Eastern Europe. Why?
[[ The reason for importing musicians from the east to play in countries like France is simple: money. “The tour would’ve been too expensive with […]
Recently, people like me had high hopes for elections in Germany and Poland. We hoped that genuine conservatives, that is to say, people close to classical liberals, would take power in these countries. As expected, however, Gerhard Schroeder came from behind and made fools of the Christian Democrats, almost completely humiliating them by triumphing after […]

The other day, a black x was flashed over Vice President Cheney’s face. I’m not posting this to write a long discourse on media bias, just to write a short version of my opinion that the X was not an accident. I’m not saying that it was a vast left-wing conspiracy, just that some producer […]

Formed after the frenetic days of Wars for Independence, Ben-Gurion, and kibbutzim, the Likud Party offered the first real alternative to Labor and has obtained power at key moments in the past few decades, starting with Menachem Begin.
In the past few yrs, Israelis have had a hard time turning away from Likud’s hardline appeal. […]

As if the minute long, unskippable FBI anti-piracy warning isn’t enough, attorneys-general from thirty-two states have called for “anti-smoking announcements to all new DVDs which depict smoking.”
Please, Nanny, make life a little more regimented and dull.

On Thursday, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and MIT scholar Nicholas Negroponte revealed the so called “green machine,” the hand-crank powered, $100 dollar laptop aimed at children in the developing world. The machines use a 500 mHz processor and bright LED screen to reduce power consumption, use flash memory instead of hard drives and are encased […]

Cindy Sheehan makes my blood boil. Not because she disagrees with the war in Iraq. Not because she dislikes President Bush. She makes my blood boil because she is a petty attention whore. Cindy Sheehan’s campaign is not about the war. It’s not about the soldiers. It’s about Cindy Sheehan. What I find most appalling […]

Warranties account for 36% of Best Buy’s operating profit. They account for nearly 100% of Circuit City’s. Wal-Mart, looking to move into the upscale electronics market, is interested in getting a piece of this action.
Electronics stores like Best Buy often provide what’s called ‘product specific services.’ This means their salespeople will explain how a […]
